Week 12: Albedo and Greenhouse Gases
What did you do in lab today?
What are the primary points in the video?
How fast climate change is really happening
We have knocked down whole ecosystems in the ocean
Most of the US economy is made up of fossil fuels
Other countries are doing way more with solar energy than we are
Climate change is not a matter of if but when
What are the major issues?
Fossil fuels
Greenland is melting
By 2040, you will be able to sail over the North Pole (actually happened last year)
Places around the equator will become unlivable
What questions do you want us to teach you?
How can we help?
How do renewable energy sources work compared to fossil fuels?
What was the big question?
How is climate change affecting Iowa?
What did you learn in Thursday’s discussion?
Climate is a 30-year average of weather
6 variables that control climate
Latitude
Distance from the equator
Closer to the poles → cold temperature
Closer to the equator → warmer temperature
Ocean currents
Temperature of an ocean current affects the temperature of the air that passes over it
Wind and air masses
An air mass is a large volume of air that takes on the climatic conditions of the area where it is formed
Elevation
The higher the altitude, the colder the temperature
As the air rises, it expands because of the lower air pressure
As the air expands, it cools
Relief
Precipitation when an air mass rises to cross a mountain barrier
An adiabatic process is one in which no heat is gained or lost by the system
Near water
In the summer, the water acts like an air conditioner to keep the air temperatures cool
In the winter, water acts like a heater to keep the temperatures from getting too cold
Continental climate (away from water)
Maritime climate (close to water)
Read chapter 12 of the textbook.
What did you learn?
Weather: short-term atmospheric conditions in an area
Can change day to day
Climate: usual weather activity that can be expected for an area and time of year
Measure in 30-year intervals
What was the most helpful?
I found it interesting to read about the flood that happened here in 2008. I lived in Iowa during the time, but I lived 2 hours away. I did not know much about this, so it was interesting to read about it and see pictures.
What do you need more information on?
I do not need any more information on what was discussed in the textbook.
What questions, concerns, and/or comments do you have?
I do not have any questions, concerns, and/or comments after this week's lab and lecture.
